James Hutchison married twice. Firstly to Frances McKinnell Copland in 1887 at Glasgow and they had seven children, three dying in infancy. Frances died in 1894 at Aberdeen and JH married Alexandrina West 1 October 1895. Their son Victor James Hutchison was born 7 August 1896 in Aberdeen and died 26 April 1937 at Brighton, then they had a daughter Ruby Margaret (Marguerite) born 17 October 1899 who died 28 January 1900, having been pre-deceased by her mother (Alexandrina died 26 November 1899 after "fall from a height") but I would guess suicide while suffering from post-natal depression.

Victor James Hutchison also married twice, firstly to a young widow  with four children, Elizabeth Copland Forbes (Mrs  Mungall) on 13 April 1926 - possibly a shotgun wedding as she had a son, Victor Forbes Hutchison in November. Elizabeth died 29 November 1926, after the birth and the baby only survived a very short time.

VJH married Mary Ellen Jack on 9 April 1928 at Aberdeen and their daughter Eileen May Hutchison was born 6 November 1929.

Now, if you'd like to undertake the solution to a mystery that has bothered me for some years, here are the facts.

Elsie - i e Betty Strachan's mother - and Victor - Eileen's Father - were the two most literary members of that generation, but unlike their siblings, they have left no trace in the educational records of Aberdeenshire.

Their sisters are readily traced through the well preserved registers of all the Aberdeen Schools, and the Hatton school, as well as the other five schools in Cruden at that time, but there's no trace whatever of these two people.

Betty Strachan says that her mother was a bit of an invalid, and was kept off school -  but who gave her the excellent education she clearly had?

And Victor couldn't have been a weakling, for he became a decorated member of the Grenadier Guards during the Great War.
